Fishermen, marina operators, and charter boat captains rallied in Washington DC last week to protest what they call excessive fishing regulations that will be putting them out of work.

NOAA, the national Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which enforces the Magnuson-Stevens Act has already closed some areas  and intends to close others to stop overfishing.

Many coastal communities have been negatively impacted by these closures since their primary economy depends on the fishing industry.  From fishermen to restaurants and other marine related business owners, they are all feeling the heat.

Not that anyone is interested in fishing any species into extinction, the problem is the data that is being used as the basis for these bans is flawed – “out of date and scientifically suspect” is how Rep. Henry Brown, R-South Carolina puts it.

Capt. Steve Lamp who regularly takes clients out on trips to the Dry Tortugas tells us about what it’s like out there and what kinds of fish you can expect to catch.  The Dry Tortugas and the Marquesas have always been one of our favorite places to fish.  Miles and miles of pristine water filled with fish that are always a little bigger than what you find closer to home!

It’s a great day to go fishing in the Florida Keys!  We are so lucky to live here!  Theoretically, we can fish the backcountry in the morning and head off shore for the afternoon.  The Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic.  Take your pick – it’s all so close!  Where else can one enjoy such a diverse fishery as we do here in the Florida Keys?

The Magnuson Stevens Act, originally designed to keep foreign interests from invading our waters and destroying our resources has evolved over the years into something that is now taking away our own ability to make a living on the water and even restricting the recreational fisherman from fishing our own waters.

Many people are only just now becoming aware of the freedoms that we are losing because of this Act and the impact that it will have on not only the commercial and charterfishering industry but also on the recreational fisherman.

Gov. Charlie Crist aboard the Mr. Z with Capt. Craig Eubank

Capt. Craig Eubank talks with Capt. Marlin Scott today about how to recognize fishing trends as they change throughout the year.  We are lucky in the Florida Keys because we are able to fish year round so we want to be able to determine what kinds of fish to target and how best to go after them.  Capt. Craig has been fishing these waters around Key West for many years and is out there nearly every day. We love to have Capt. Craig on because he is so full of really good useful information and he’s not afraid to share it. Look, even the Governor thinks so! –>

When the oceanside fishing opportunities are oily, calm, crystal clear and basically quiet.  The Gulf of Mexico yields fantastic fishing opportunities on the wrecks and rock piles from 12-50 miles offshore into the Gulf.  Capt. Fuzzy Francois brings us this podcast where he talks about the permit and cobia that are so abundant on these spots.  You can also expect to find plenty of  mangrove snapper,  gag grouper, red grouper, sharks, cero mackerel, spanish mackerel and kingfish.

Most days, you’ll find Capt. Chris Robinson heading out towards the legendary “Action Central” of the Lower Florida Keys.  A place he claims to have caught 130 fish in just three hours!   A local for many years, Capt. Chris knows where the fish live:  Cero mackerel, gray snapper, bonefish, bull shark, hammerhead sharks, black tip sharks, spinner sharks, mutton snapper, lane snapper, grunts, red grouper, gag grouper, barracuda, trout, ladyfish, blue fish, jack crevalle, horse-eyed jacks, yellowtail, tarpon, permit…..

Fall is just about here and along with it comes the beginning of a truly amazing fishing season – the best time of the year.  As the temperatures cool down up north, several species of fish make their way down through the Florida Keys in search of warmer water to spend the winter.    We’ll begin to see an abundance of cobia, redfish, mutton snapper and grouper; especially gags and reds.  The grouper season will close soon for four months so you’ll want to take advantage of this good eating fish while you can.

Today, Capt. Paul Tryon talks with Capt. Marlin Scott about what happens in the fall and how you can take advantage of it.  If you don’t mind a little rough water and cooler temperatures, it’s an angler’s playground out there!

Just in time too, as the first SLAM tournament is coming up.  The annual Mercury Southernmost Light-Tackle Anglers Masters (S.L.A.M.) Celebrity Fishing Tournament is next weekend.  Friday, Sept. 11th through Sunday the 13th.  The first in a set of three fall tournaments held every year to raise money for cystic fibrosis.

The entry fee includes two days of guided fishing with a celebrity  plus admission to all the tournament’s events for each angler and a guest.

This year’s celebrities include angling TV personality Stu Apte, NASA space shuttle astronaut Bruce Melnick and Mark Cooper who use to play for the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Denver Broncos.

Just outside of Key West we have an amazing place called Boca Grande.  It’s much different than the “Other Boca Grande” on the west coast of Florida.  If you haven’t been, you’ve got to see it.  It’s a fisherman’s dream.  In this podcast Capt. Phil Thompson tells Capt. Marlin Scott what it’s like.  You’ll learn where it is, what’s biting and how to get the most out of your trip.

This podcast was recorded outside at the Key West Harbour Yacht Club in Key West.  It is close to the Boca Chica Naval Air Station so you will hear the planes flying overhead once in a while throughout the podcast.  I apologize for that, but this podcast was too interesting to just delete.
