Capt. Marlin had a chance recently to interview Sterling Holbrook who came to Key West to take part in a course offered by Performance Free Diving. Sterling has been diving for almost 50 years and can hold his breath for five minutes and 40 seconds! This is a fascinating interview that will open your eyes to what this sport is really all about. I think you will find the interview to be well…..breathtaking!

Captain Marlin Scott talks with CiCi Roycraft of Dive Key West on today’s podcast about some of the ships that make up the Wreck Trek. Each one has a fascinating history. Some of which has to do with where it’s been or the history that it was involved with and others because of how they were sunk. Did you know that when the Spiegel Grove was scuttled it landed on it’s side but then a hurricane came along and righted it? Ok, that’s a pretty famous one, I knew that too. But do you know which one has a 12′ long hammerhead shark on it? Better listen and find out!

The Thunderbolt is a 188′ research vessel sunk about 5 miles southeast of Marathon. She sits upright in 120 ft. of water and is an awesome dive for the more advanced diver. There is usually a fair amount of current so most dive shops are going to want to know that you know what you’re doing before they take you out on this one.

This ship had an interesting former life. Before she was scuttled, she was used by researchers from Florida Power and Light to study lightning strikes. They used jet engines to blast ionized gas into the atmosphere to attract lightning strikes on the boat.

In this podcast, Captain Marlin Scott talks with Bob Roney of Captain Hook’s Marina and Dive Center about the wreck and what it takes to dive it.

In this podcast Shawn Hull, one of our magazine’s regular contributors tells us about his experiences diving the Vandenberg. The USS Vandenberg is a 522 ft. long ship that was sunk off of Key West a few months ago. Shawn, who is an avid diver, was there to witness this ship go down and he has been back to dive it every weekend since. Over the last few months the “Vandy” as the locals call her has been undergoing a transformation as she lies on the ocean floor. She has been growing things. Her white hull is now covered in green and now the fish are beginning to take up residence inside her belly. Shawn and his dive buddy Vinny have been with her every step of the way. Listen in as they tell us what it’s like.

Shawn Hull writes our Key West Dive Report every month. When he’s not diving or making multimillion dollar business deals, you can find him hanging around here. He knows everything there is to know about diving in Key West (or at least he should by now, he’s practically got gills) so drop him a line and he’ll answer your question in a future post.
